Prof. Geerd-R. Hoffmann FBCS CITP graduated as Diplom-Mathematiker at the University of Tübingen in 1969. After some research work in Artificial Intelligence, he became Akad. Rat
for Computer Science at Tübingen in 1972 and Head of the Operating Systems Group of the university computing centre. After two years as Fellow at the Data Handling Division of
CERN in Geneva, he became Head of the Computer Division of ECMWF in Reading in 1980. After joining Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) on 1 July 1997, he worked as Head of the
Department for Systems and Operation until 31 December 2003, when he was appointed Director General of the Technical Infrastructure and Operation Business Area and joined the
Board of Directors of DWD. His main scientific interests are super computers, parallel systems, networks, data handling and GRID computing.
Since October 1992, he is Visiting Professor in the Department of Electronics and Computer Sciences at the University of Southampton, UK. He was a Director of DANTE (Distributing
Advanced Networking to Europe) from 1995 to 2001. He is a member of the Governing Board of the German Research Network (DFN) since 5 years ago. He is chairman of the WMO
Inter-commission Coordination Group on the WMO Information System. He is also chairman of the UNICORE Forum e.V. since its start.
