DWD weather prediction system – saving lives DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst) has developed numerical weather forecasting models based on distributed computing to facilitate the prediction of weather systems up to five days ahead. A global model at DWD in Germany produces data for high-resolution regional models used at national meteorological services worldwide.The vast quantities of forecast data produced at DWD are sent over the GÉANT and TEIN3 networks to PAGASA in the Philippines, just one of the national weather bureaus that benefits from this service, enabling the bureau to give early warnings of typhoon danger to its citizens and thus to save lives.
perfSONAR MDM – monitoring the Large Hadron Collider networkThe Large Hadron Collider (LHC) generates vast amounts of data which is distributed daily between 11 Tier 1 centres around the world for analysis. Facilitating this is the LHC Optical Private Network (LHCOPN), a series of GÉANT Lambda 10Gbps wavelengths connecting LHC with each Tier 1 centre. Installed at each of these centres is perfSONAR MDM (Multi-Domain Monitoring), providing users with a transparent view of the network to monitor bandwidth availability and identify traffic congestion, thereby ensuring that vital data can always get through.
